Out With The Old . . .

More News

TAMPA, Florida (ABL wire) - The 2001 roster had already been printed, but an eleventh hour decision has removed yet another fixture from the Tampa Cherokee dugout.   Reports of more problems for the perpetually injured Todd Stottlemyre resulted in a last minute decision to cut the aging veteran, enabling Adam Bernero to stick with the team.

Four roster moves over the past year have cost the Cherokees 45 years of combined leadership.  Gone are Rickey Henderson (1987), Stottlemyre (1989), Albert Belle (1990), and David Cone (1993).  These veterans shared between them sixteen championship rings, two MVP awards, one Cy Young award, and numerous spots in the ABL record books.  These departures leave Travis Fryman, Jim Thome, and Mike Timlin as the only surviving members of the Cherokee team that made the move from Charleston to Tampa in 1994.

On draft day, the Jayhawks traded it's 5th pick of the 2002 draft to the Tampa Cherokees for Albert Belle.......Now just 3 days later, the Jayhawks trade it's 4th pick of the 2002 draft to Vermont for Dwight Gooden...Both players are rent-a-players, but are needed to give the Jayhawks bench power and a much needed "C" starter. To make room for Gooden, the Jayhawks sent Tim Wakefield to the minors, And released Danny Baez. (For the 2nd consecutive year).
