SEATTLE, Washington - The stars shined bright at Safeco Field as baseball's best
sluggers took swings in the annual home run derby. No star shined brighter than
Falls City's Luis Gonzalez. Gonzo outslugged Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Jeromy Giambi
win the crown. Gonzalez was the only ABLer to participate in the event this year. The last ABLer to win the Major League home run derby crown was Tino Martinez. Tino went deep more often than any one in 1997 at Cleveland's Jacobs Field. Cal Ripken, Jr was the other ABLer to win the the Home Run Derby. Cal ripped down the fences of Toronto's SkyDome in 1991. Juan Gonzalez won the Crown in 1993 at Baltimore's Camden Yards. Juan was not in the ABL at the time. He is currently playing for Cape Canaveral.
