NICKWOOD, Ohio - Sad news from the baseball world... former Nickwood Gilsey infielder Luis Sojo announced his retirement from baseball. Sojo helped the Gilseys to a 24-24 record, and their only ABL championship in just the team's first year in the league as their every day secondbaseman that year. He was a mainstay on the Gilseys during most of the team's five year existance. Luis was a fan favorite in Nickwood, and developed an almost cult-like following because of his nickname, Sojo in the Rain, which he was dubbed by owner Greg Mann. Although he wasn't a superstar, Sojo showed his versatility by playing secondbase, shortstop, and thirdbase. He came up with quite a few clutch hits off the bench and in spot-starts. The Gilseys were alway happy to have him on their bench, knowing they had a solid player in case a regular infielder went down with an injury, or if they needed a late inning defensive replacement. -- submitted by Greg Mann, 12/13/01 Editor Update: The New York Yankees re-signed Luis Sojo to a minor league contract on January 8 and invited him to spring training.
