Former Rebels OF Cowens Dies

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (TSN.ca) - Al Cowens, the Alabama Rebels reserve outfielder, died of an apparent heart attack Monday near Los Angeles.  He was 50.

Cowens spent 13 years in the majors with the Kansas City Royals, California Angels, Detroit Tigers, and Seattle Mariners.  He compiled a .270 batting average with 108 homers and 717 RBIs.  His best season came in 1977 when he hit .312 with 23 homers, 112 RBIs, and won a Gold Glove.  Cowens finished second to Rod Carew in Most Valuable Player voting that year.

Cowens is survived by his wife Velma, sons Purvis, Dante and Rayvon and a daughter Trinetta.
