Bud Division Decided By Playoff

More News

The ABL has a history of strange stories and folklore.  But nothing seems stranger than trying to determine the Budweiser Division Champion this season.

At the end of Game 46, Alabama, Falls City and Tampa were tied for first place.  Tampa went on to sweep Falls City in Games 47 and 48 to eliminate the Returnables.  The Cherokees gained the division title when Alabama lost Game 47 to Venom.  And everyone lived happily ever after.

But wait, there is more!  While doing stats, Glenn realized that Vernon Wells made his tenth appearance of the season.  As a square card, he was only eligible to play in nine games.  Manager Boone went public with the error and willfully forfeited the game.  The forfeit caused a three-way tie at the top of the division.

Since the rulebook does not clearly stated tie-breaking methods, the three managers debated several options.  When the dust settled,  Chris Bowling elected not to participate in a play-off tournament.  Tampa had the best head-to-head record, the Cherokees hosted a one-game playoff with Alabama.  The managers decided not to count the outcome of the game nor the player stats in the regular season records.
