Former Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Joe Nuxhall has been selected by fans as a finalist for the Ford Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting.

Nuxhall was a 135-game winner during 16 major league seasons spent almost entirely with the Reds. He died last year of cancer.

The Baseball Hall of Fame says Nuxhall led fan balloting with 19,547 votes. Former Montreal Expos broadcaster Jacques Doucet (10,282) and Toronto's Tom Cheek (8,992) also earned spots on the final ballot Monday.

They join seven broadcasters selected by a Hall of Fame research committee: Billy Berroa, Ken Coleman, Dizzy Dean, Lanny Frattare, Tony Kubek, Graham McNamee and Dave Van Horne. The winner will be announced December. 9.

The winner will be chosen by five broadcast historians or columnists and the 15 living winners of the award.
